An activated carbon activation furnace is a rotary thermal processing machine that converts carbonized material into finished activated carbon through high-temperature steam activation.
Working at 850–1,100 °C, it injects superheated steam into a rotating furnace tube, where the gas-solid reaction opens blocked pores and builds a rich internal pore structure — giving the product a specific surface area of 700–2,000 m²/g and the strong adsorption capacity required for water treatment, gold recovery, and air purification.
The furnace processes virtually all carbonized biomass and mineral chars, including coconut shell, palm shell, apricot shell, peach shell, walnut shell, wood chips, bamboo, sawdust charcoal, and coal-based char, with a flexible output of 150–250 kg per hour (approximately 3.6–6 tons per day) per unit. For larger projects, multiple furnace bodies can be combined into a turnkey production line with a daily output of 4 tons, 10 tons, or more.
Industrial Activated Carbon Activation Furnace for Sale
Activated carbon is one of the most widely used adsorbents in the world. It is produced from carbon-rich materials such as coconut shell, wood, fruit stones, bamboo, and coal. After carbonization, the raw char still has a limited pore structure — it must be “activated” to become a functional adsorbent.
The activation furnace is the equipment that performs this critical step. Inside the rotating furnace tube, the carbonized material reacts with superheated steam at high temperature. This gas-solid reaction burns away tar and amorphous carbon, opens blocked micropores, and creates new pore channels, producing activated carbon with an iodine adsorption value of 900–1,500 mg/g according to customer requirements.

A complete activation furnace system consists of:
- Rotary furnace tube – heat-resistant 310S stainless steel, the heart of the activation reaction.
- External insulation heating chamber – silicon-aluminum refractory modules with fish-scale sealing.
- Transmission and support system – gears, riding rings, rollers, and frequency-controlled motor.
- Feeding and discharging sealed heads – three-layer stainless steel fish-scale seals.
- Steam supply and exhaust gas system – steam pipes, converters, valves, and tail gas ducts.
- Waste heat boiler (0.5 T) – recovers exhaust heat to generate the activation steam.
- Cooling and discharging system – water-jacketed cooling screw and rotary char cooler.
- Electrical control cabinet – centralized temperature, speed, and feed control.
How Does the Activation Process Work?
Physical activation — also called the steam activation method — uses pure carbonized material without any chemical additives. The process inside the activated carbon activation furnace follows three pore-development stages:
- Stage 1 – Pore Opening. The activating agent (steam) oxidizes and burns off the tar and amorphous carbon deposited between the microcrystalline structures of the char. Blocked and closed pores from the carbonization stage are opened. Carbon burn-off in this stage is usually below 10%.
- Stage 2 – Micropore Development. Once the deposits are removed, the steam reacts selectively with the carbon microcrystals, creating large numbers of new pores — predominantly micropores, which are responsible for high iodine adsorption values.
- Stage 3 – Pore Widening. As activation continues, carbon atoms on the pore walls are progressively gasified. Pores expand, and walls between adjacent pores disappear, forming mesopores. Burn-off in this stage can exceed 50%, and the mesopore structure (methylene blue adsorption capacity) becomes well developed.

Key Operating Parameters in Practice
| Target Product | Activation Temperature | Furnace Speed | Residence Time | 产量 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iodine value ≤ 1,100 mg/g (best yield) | ≤ 950 °C | ≥ 1 rpm / 3 min | ≤ 120 min | 0.15–0.2 t/h |
| Iodine value 900–950 mg/g (higher output) | ~900 °C | Increased feed | Shortened | 0.23–0.25 t/h |
| Iodine value 1,400–1,500 mg/g (premium grade) | ~1,050 °C | 1 rpm / 4–5 min | Extended | Lower yield, higher value |
| High methylene blue value | 900–950 °C | Extended time | Extended | Max steam, reduced air |
For premium grades, the specific surface area of the finished activated carbon can reach 1,800–2,000 m²/g.

External Heating vs. Internal Heating Activation Furnace: Which Is Better?
Our activated carbon activation furnace adopts the external heating (indirect heating) design, which offers decisive advantages over the traditional internal-heating rotary kiln:
| Comparison Item | External Heating Furnace (Ours) | Traditional Internal Heating Kiln |
|---|---|---|
| Product loss | Lower burn loss, +0.2% higher yield | Higher burn loss |
| Product hardness | Higher granule strength | Lower |
| 机器尺寸 | Compact, easy to transport and install | Bulky |
| Operation difficulty | Simple, no experience threshold; start/stop anytime | One startup needs ~3 days to stabilize; requires seasoned engineers on site |
| Heating method | Flameless electric heating available, precise temperature control | Open-flame heating, less precise |
| Environmental performance | Suitable for strict environmental and high-quality requirements | Higher emissions |
This is why the external heating activated carbon activation furnace is the preferred choice for producers targeting premium coconut shell activated carbon markets and regions with strict environmental regulations.

Applicable Raw Materials
The furnace activates virtually all carbonized biomass and mineral chars, including:
- Coconut shell charcoal – the premium feedstock for water purification and gold recovery carbon
- Palm shell charcoal
- Fruit pit charcoal – apricot shell, peach shell, walnut shell, date pits
- Wood charcoal and wood chips
- Bamboo charcoal
- Sawdust and rice husk charcoal
- Coal-based char

Requirement: feedstock moisture should be below 15%, and material should be in granular form for uniform activation.

How to Control Activated Carbon Quality?
One furnace, multiple product grades. By adjusting three variables — activation temperature, furnace rotation speed (residence time), and steam-to-air ratio — you can precisely target:
- Iodine value: 900 → 1,500 mg/g (higher temperature and longer time = higher iodine value).
- Methylene blue value: raise by lowering temperature to 900–950 °C, extending activation time, maximizing steam and minimizing air intake.
- Yield vs. quality balance: ≤ 950 °C delivers the highest yield and best cost-performance ratio.
The external heating design with electric heating option gives ±precise temperature control impossible with open-flame kilns, so product quality stays stable batch after batch.
Complete Activated Carbon Production Line
Beyond the activation furnace itself, we supply the full turnkey line:

- Crushing & screening – crusher, conveyors, drum screen
- 干燥 – rotary dryer (feedstock moisture control < 15%)
- 碳化 – continuous gasification carbonization furnace (self-sufficient on recycled combustible gas: CO, CH₄, H₂)
- Activation – external heating activated carbon activation furnace + waste heat boiler
- 冷却 – two-stage char cooling
- Screening & packing – flat screen + automatic packing machine
All exhaust gas is treated through dust removal and spray towers to meet environmental emission standards, and waste heat is recovered for steam generation — cutting your energy cost per ton of finished carbon.
Why Choose Our Activated Carbon Activation Furnace?
- Higher profit per ton: lower burn loss (+0.2% yield) and higher product hardness mean more sellable premium carbon from the same feedstock.
